3 Obstacles to Cruise Harmony

By Brian Bruns

Working as crew on a cruise ship is a singular experience. For those who choose to endure the tribulations, it is an existence that will absolutely change your life, surely for the better. Whether living or just learning of this lifestyle, focusing on the negatives must be avoided because they are misleading: there are simply too many tribulations to endure to rationally justify the lifestyle. Yet like most things in life, the rewards are much more than merely the sum of challenges overcome.

That being said, there are three barriers to companionship at sea that one needs to be aware of. Each of these can be overcome with a little maturity, but because ship life is a necessarily transient lifestyle it caters to the young and inexperienced. Armchair adventurers and cubicle dreamers commonly focus on the promise of working in exotic ports, imagining they are tackling the world at large. In fact, it is a small world indeed that takes you from port to port, but it is just as foreign as any on the map.

The Language Barrier
When first starting work as a waiter with Carnival Cruise Lines, I thought my native English would be an advantage. Wrong! English alone is spoken on cruise ships in guest areas, of course, but in the few off hours crew obtain from their hectic schedules, anything goes. While the occasional Australian or Canadian may relax in their English tongue, we are quite alone. The crew is from all over the earth and for most English is a second, if not third or even fourth language.

In after-hours, most crew split into national groups and speak their own languages. When a cluster of, say, Romanians, are off work together they naturally switch to Romanian. Most are considerate enough to maintain English when a foreigner is with them, but after a drink or three native tongues take over. I use Romanians as an example because I had visited there numerous times and was familiar with their language. Yet of all the nationalities I stereotyped, they were the least inclined to use English for me. Whether they were merely insensitive or assumed I understood more, I don't know.

Few things make one feel further from home than being surrounded by a sea of foreign-speaking people.

The Cultural Barrier
There are times when something familiar is all you want, when pop culture is a comfort. Most people don't realize how much time they spend talking about sports, TV, music, literature, or movies... until they can't. I am not a sports fan, yet I chafed at only seeing cricket and soccer on TV. I don't like big Hollywood blockbusters, but that was the only thing I had in common with most crew, other than work. Of television most only knew Friends or Dallas, or just maybe Married... With Children. As an American, I was truly alone on cruise ships. I found myself praying for Canadians, the most likely to understand me, though even they had vastly different forms of entertainment (oh, too bad you missed the curling championship, eh?)

The feeling of being alone in a crowd is acute at sea. Americans are used to and expect an unparalleled amount of personal space and privacy, no doubt due to our prosperity and vast land resources. Most of the world would never dream of having their own bedroom as a child growing up, nor even sharing it with but a single sibling. This becomes apparent at sea when personal space is limited to merely your own tiny bunk.

Bodies are everywhere... even in your own cabin! Roommates constantly engage in sex in shared cabins, or throw raucous parties. Yet even the polar opposite can pose a problem: I had one cabin mate who was a born-again Christian insomniac from India who would talk psalm until exhaustion took him. Even in my bunk, head and feet pressed against the walls and my curtain drawn, I was subjected to a nightly sermon until the wee hours of the morning! Another would blast a 40-part Chinese miniseries dubbed over in Thai at high volume despite my pleadings for quiet.

The Body Barrier
All those bodies were constantly changing, too. You have no time to build a rapport with most people around you because they are on their way to somewhere else. Every week dozens of crew come and go on the big ships. Friendships form and disappear with amazing rapidity at sea. In such an inhospitable environment you cling to whomever clings back, and then suddenly they are gone. Most affection is merely a band-aid. The few couples I knew that came to sea together all left apart, broken by the pressures of ship life. More often the women became empowered by their brush with American ideals and refused to blindly obey their husbands any longer, invariably leading to a split.

Not just bodies abound, mind you, but really nice ones. Because crew are invariably young and attractive people from all over the earth, naughty things happen. While on the surface this may seem nice, any first-worlder will quickly realize that they are a prize worth fighting for. Many people will go to great lengths for the hope of a green card. Before you know it, nearly every relationship you have becomes a source of uncertainty as you question motives. Women I had never met before came out of the woodwork in attempts to seduce me, simply because of my nationality.

The superficiality of the relationships at sea is seductive, though. I look back fondly at how many people from all over the earth I know and can now relate to. Of course, it's not really the ship life that I am happily recalling, but the growth of awareness that was blossoming within me. Truly ship life is more than the sum of its parts.

Cruise Plans - What You Have To Do?

By Abhishek Agarwal Platinum Quality Author

Your cruise vacation requires more planning than what is seen at first. You may have determined your destination but have you finalized this time? For travelling in an n empty or less crowded ship would you instead go during the off-season? Can you pick a date which is almost a year away and definitely say that you will surely go on your vacation on that date? Will the prices decrease or rise in due course of time? All these questions are difficult and frustrating to answer. This is, when compared to the planning of your vacation, is only the tip of an iceberg.

There are far too many variables that are involved in this to answer these with any amount of assertiveness. You have no idea as to what will come the next. There may be some other important dealing related to your work, which may make you change your plans. Also, your vacation depends on the plans of other passengers, which you have no means to know about and you can never be definite about prices as they vary very often with respect to time and company. Some things that can be done to make your initial planning easy are given below.

The first thing that must be done is comparison shopping. Browse through the prices of various cruises that have similar features, compare prices and services offered for the price. This can be done easily by surfing through the net or by consulting a travel agent.

After you have done eliminations with respect to the prices, decide on the dates of your vacation and also the destination of your vacation. This will indeed narrow the cruising companies available to you.

You can make deals at better prices if you are flexible about the timing of your vacation. If you cannot be flexible, it is better to finish reservations at a very early date. This will ensure that you have a good deal and also makes certain that you have a reservation in the cruise. Cruises fill up early and if you are waiting till the last minute for finalizing your vacation, your luck may run out.

Early reservations may or may not give discounts that you look for, but then it sure will save you a spot on the cruise. Even though cruise lines try best to accommodate you, in spite of booking early, you may not get reservations for the required dates.

Also, when there are vacant spaces in the cruise, to fill the ship, the cruising line will offer special discounts and give offers. If you go during these times when offers are put up, you will make really good deals and save lots of money on your vacation. Also for doing this, you must be prepared to go anytime. Your passports, visa and other papers must be ready.

If you actually decide in travelling during the off-season, a variety of choices will be available for you, and the odds that you get to go, paying a very low rate is very high.

Single Cruises - Find Your Counterpart!

By Abhishek Agarwal Platinum Quality Author

Owing to the demand for cruising lines, there has been an increase in the number of single travellers who wish to spend some time of theirs cruising. The peak of number of singles is the valentine season, when singles who do not have a date go on a vacation and be with others who have the same predicament as them.

This is the time when special singles prices and discounts are offered to customers along with special singles activities and events related to the Valentine's Day. The best way for completing a singles adventure is Single cruise.

It is common knowledge that many singles are disappointed during the Valentine's Day. Also, many people find it difficult to search for a date for Valentine's Day every year by going out.

The main reasons for this are that they do not have the time or are far too shy to go and look for dates. So for all singles, who are about to give up looking for dates, it is better if you save money and join singles cruises where you will get the chance to meet people of similar tastes you have and may be develop a close friendship or even find your soul mate.

When you go as a single, you are a stranger to everyone around you in your cruise. So, those who know the purpose of a single cruise, remain casual and get acquainted with the others around them. By doing so, they relax and become flexible around everyone around them.

The single cruises offer many activities for the singles travelling and give opportunities for every one to identify their future partners, who may be right next to you or just round the corner, while you are meeting new friends.

Single cruise has become very famous, being a way which is not very expensive to socialize with new people. Also, many singles prefer spending their vacation alone as they get privacy only while doing so. Singles go on adventures with people who have like opinions and be potential mates or good friends.

If you wish to enjoy the sun and beautiful resorts, tasting the rum punch, the Caribbean single cruise would be the best for you that is available. But if you wish to enjoy romantic moonlit nights and taste red wine, a European cruise will be the better choice. There always will be cruises that covers all your needs, whatever they may be.

All that you have to do to enjoy your cruise is that do some research about cruise lines and choose the best.

Some extensive tips to help you to decide on you cruise:

1. Single travellers will be charged at single rates. This is because the most rooms are designed for two people, so cruise lines add extra charges for one person per room. The price is not going to be a 150 or 200% extra charge, but it will be a bit costlier.

2. The cruises give up additional fee and give you boarding with someone else. In case you do not wish to share your privacy or your room with someone else, pay extra money and reserve a room for your own self alone and that would be better.

On the other hand, if you are interested in sharing a room with some other person, the grab the promo offered.

3. Look at broadsheet or look in the internet if single cruises are still available. There are also cruise ships that are pre-booked by singles organizations that allows their members only to join. However, many of these companies allow non-members also to join. But, for this, non-members will need to pay a higher price than the ones paid by the members.

Even though you join these groups, you will be a single only. The good thing is that you will meet other singles and socialize with them. You can be comfortable as they are also single cruisers just like you, who are looking for love or companionship.

Cruise Ships - Unearthing The Past, Enjoying The Present, Awaiting The Future?

By Abhishek Agarwal Platinum Quality Author

Consider buying yourself and the family one luxury cruise vacation. Over a particular departure date, you would embark any one of the 1st-class, hotel-like cruise ships for every vacation of yours.

It would serve as the sailboat, a temporary home, shopping centre, massage parlour, entertainment centre, and many more.

A cruise ship might house all these and other kind of amenities in some urban areas. Yes, it may. It makes some cruise on a holiday not only for an escapade to not to forget but also as one excellent option for the next vacation.

Cruise ships, are known as some cruise or luxury ships, are passenger ships which are used for going pleasure voyages. This voyage itself and their amenities, which might be found over the board, are the essential parts of one cruising experience.

The sudden growth of cruises in a travel industry made cruise lines to make some modern ships which would cater the needs of growing cruise passengers.

It has itineraries for beautiful destinations, where sailors and engineers design cruise ships which can survive various sea-related factors.

Development and History

The Titanic is the prime ancestor of the cruise ships present today, which has fine eating areas, nicely-appointed staterooms, and also other amenities which are needed by some passengers who are on-board.

During 19th century, one Director Albert Ballin of Hamburg-America was the very first man to conduct one regular practice of allowing a transatlantic ship on southern trips on the very worst winter.

Not only as one ship, it's also used like a propaganda for promoting the cruising vacation. A Love Boat-- one 1970's television series-- had Pacific Princess,a cruise of a named Princess Cruise.

It has raised awareness of various cruises like one vacation opting only for very rich guys but also for very ordinary people in US.

Cruise Ships -Present

In 2004, there're hundreds of cruises, which have a great carrying capacity of 3000 passengers and more, displacing much more than 1 million tons. Thus, it's the largest ships which were ever built.

It may cruise to destinations like Antarctica. Modern ships too are considered as a "floating hotel" having one complete staff in addition with a regular ship crew.

These cruises are designed for handling adequate provision of food. Cruise ships are serving thousands of eatables at every setting. Storage facilities for many raw ingredients and many beverages are always with the latest technology.

Queen Mary 2 is the largest ship in operation now. It has 151,400 gross tons and is owned by Cunard Line, one of those subsidiaries in Carnival Corporation, the large cruise company in operation today.

Queen Mary 2 has 5 on-board pools, sweeping stairs, one ballroom, a 360-degree deck, and various specialty shops. It's built for reviving the glamour of the ocean liners, the business would sink as jet travel started the prominence over the Atlantic.

Cruise Ship- Future

Just now, Royal Caribbean International told last February 6, of 2006 that they would be releasing in the autumn of 2009 the very large and the expensive cruise ship on the globe, which amounted to $1.24 billion. It's named Project Genesis. It may also hold 6,400 passengers.

It's estimated to possess a gross ton of around 220,000. One gross register ton is the only standard measurement for a ship's size, which is equal to 100 feet cubed. The $1.24 billion pay would cover every expense required for the interior finishing of a ship.

Now, what else would you expect from these kind of cruise ships?

A Once in a Lifetime Antarctica Cruise

By Jack M Patterson

Are you looking for an adventure that is different from anything you have ever done before? If you are, you ought to consider taking an Antarctica cruise.

You can enjoy several different types of cruises to the Antarctic, depending on how active you wish to be and how much luxury you require on your cruise ship. You can take a cruise on a large luxury liner with five star services or you can take a cruise on a small research vessel from which you can enjoy a more relaxed, hands-on experience with the Antarctic wild life.

Cruise ships of all kinds, holding anywhere from twenty to two hundred passengers sail the Antarctic Circle, where life is suitable only for a select number of plants and animals. Lack of human habitation keeps Antarctica pristine so that when passengers aboard Antarctica cruise ships visit the continent, they get to see unspoiled nature as they can see it nowhere else in the world.

The sea is crystal blue and the ice formations that rise from it are magnificent works of art. Marine life such as whales and sea lions entertain cruise ship passengers while land dwelling creatures such as penguins thrill them while on excursions from the boat.

Most cruise ships allow you to take kayaks from them to icebergs, weather permitting, where you can take a hike or even camp overnight, if you dare. While resting on a chunk of Antarctic ice, you might have the privilege of viewing an albatross in its natural habitat.

Indeed, an Antarctica cruise is like no other vacation in the world. If you want to take an opportunity of a lifetime, you can visit http://www.ExpeditionTrips.com where you can book a cruise to Antarctica on any type of ship and at any level of activity that you choose.

Cruise Travel Tips

By Doris Jumbe

Are you planning on going on a cruise? Well if this is your very first time, you may not be very sure what to expect. Having a few tips to help you out can be very helpful to you. So, here are some important cruise travel tips to keep in mind when you go on a cruise.

Tip #1 - Have a Carry On Bag - The first one of cruise travel tips that you'll need to remember if you're going on a cruise is to make sure that you have a carry on bag. Once you get on the ship, you'll want to visit your cabin but you can't expect your baggage to show up for awhile. So, it's a good idea to have a carry on that has some clothes and a few essential toiletries on hand.

Tip #2 - Get a Map of the Ship - Cruise ships are huge. You don't want to get lost and a map can definitely be a huge help to you. Make sure you have the map and take a bit to look it over so that you'll be able to more easily get around the ship.

Tip #3 - Walk to Where You're Going - When you are going to dinner or you are going to a show on board, you may want to walk wherever you are going. You'll find that the elevators are probably going to be full and often many people are trying to wait for an elevator and they may not be in a great mood. So, just go ahead and take a stroll and get a bit of exercise walking to wherever you need to go.

Tip #4 - Keep the Noise Down at Night - If you are out late at night, make sure that you keep the noise down. You don't want to go around slamming the doors of your cabin, since it can wake many people around you up. So, have some courtesy and shut your doors as quietly as possible to avoid encounters with grumpy cruise mates.

Tip #5 - Avoid Wearing Expensive Jewelry - When you are on a cruise ship, don't go around wearing your most expensive jewelry so everyone can see it. Of course there will be some formal dinners where you will want to look great, but leave the most expensive jewelry at home. Cruise Ships - Get the Best Deal Through Travel Agents

By Ricky Hussey

Reality is, finding the best cruise deal is not as much of a shock as it once was. Once it was almost a benefit to go on a travel holiday but today, with lots of ships being built & cruise lines increased plans, enormous cruise deals nearly skip out at you daily.

One of the primary ways you can obtain a deal on a travel is to book through the off season. From the months of November to April, many people don't consider taking a holiday. Therefore, travel prices radically drop. However, there are still a range of different places you can go that are warm & welcoming through this off-season.

Finding a travel agent could not be easier. You might have already used one to place previous vacations. If not, your phone directory will list all the ones that are neighboring to you, or failing this use the net which will give you listings of all tour agents & their contact numbers. By using the services of a tour agent you are handing over all the tough work you would usually have to do to find what you're hunting for. All the while, they try to bank you as much cash as possible. Tour agents often obtain early notices of promotional cruises before they hit the common public.

You do not have to pay an arm & a leg for a tour agent. Their fees are generally already built into the cost of the booking, so you would not get a bill from them once the cruise is remunerated for. But you can bank on that booking at times by using an online tour agent. No, they are not all shysters, though just as with any online trade, the travel industry has seen some unsavory characters. You can dig up past this by doing few researches on the agent. Look for blogs, reviews, & forum posts about the agents to see if others have had fine experiences with them.

It's better to subscribe for the information letters that are forwarded by hundreds of cruise agents. It's true that most of the cruise agents would favor to send you the bid with the medium as a news letter. In a nutshell, doing a slight extra "grunt job" during the shopping stage can really pay off & discover you the finest cruise deals. Even chipping 20% off the original registered price means more money to gorge on your tour.

Holland American Alaskan Cruising - New Alaskan Cuisine

By Brian Schmidt Platinum Quality Author

Alaska is a place to experience not merely to visit or to see. Holland American Alaskan Cruising is the best way to experience the marvels of the Alaska coast. Add Holland America cruise tours to your Alaskan itinerary, and you have the makings of a once in a lifetime Alaskan adventure.

Announced in April of 2005, Holland America will launch a new Alaskan culinary experience to its seven ships bound for Alaskan cruising. HAL's Master Chef Rudi Sodamin has developed a menu of Alaskan salmon dishes. Dubbed "Going Wild for Salmon", this feature is an extensive menu rotation of Alaskan salmon during each cruise. This Alaskan delight will also include on-board culinary events, cooking demonstrations and seminars.

Having spent time recently in Anchorage Alaska, Chef Rudi thought that the delicious Alaskan salmon should be brought on board. This will enhance the Alaskan flavor of cruising to Alaska aboard Holland America.

Chef Rudi and his staff have developed about 50 distinctive Alaskan salmon recipes. Every night, a whole range of Alaskan salmon dishes will be available. The "Going Wild for Salmon" menu choices will be available 5 nights a week on board their Alaskan cruises. Holland America now offers more Alaskan salmon dishes than any other cruise line to Alaska.

These dishes will include appetizers and entrees. Just the sound of the dishes makes your mouth water - Thin Alaskan Salmon Scallops with Fresh Herb Dressing; Hazelnut Crusted Alaskan Salmon with Sorrel Sauce; Alaskan Salmon and Lobster Chowder; Alaskan Salmon Baked in Phyllo with Shitake Mushrooms & Champagne Sauce. Are you full yet?

Holland America is always looking for ways to deepen the Alaskan experience. Alaskan cruisers can now experience Alaska with their eyes, ears and their palate. A leader in Alaskan cruising, Holland America will sail seven ships on 134 cruises to Alaska in 2005. Their premium ships offer elegant spaciousness and fewer passengers than other major cruise lines.

Ten Things Not to Forget on Your Next Caribbean Cruise

By Rich Johnson

Here are a few items to pack before heading on your next cruise to the Caribbean, Bermuda, the Bahamas, or Mexico.

* 1. Ambient Noise Maker It's possible that the guests next door may keep you up longer than you would like to stay up. Kids running up and down the halls or neighbors that have had one too many to drink, can disturb your sleep. An ambient noise maker can help drown out the background noise and give you a better night's sleep.

* 2. Snorkel If you are taking a cruise to tropical waters, there is a good chance that snorkeling is on your itinerary. Snorkeling tours usually have swim fins, swim mask, and a snorkel included free of charge on your excursion. You need to think though - how many mouths have been on that snorkel?

* 3. Camera Cruise lines have many photographers that capture great pictures while you are on your cruise. The problem is that they don't usually go on excursions with you. I would recommend a decent, but not too big or expensive of a camera to take with you. A big camera can get too heavy and an expensive one may make you a target of crime.

* 4. Sea Sick Medicine You never know when the rolling seas will make your stomach sick. There are patches and other medications to help ease sea sickness.

* 5. Diarrhea Medicine Yuck. From a bad drink of water on a tropical island to too many preservatives in some cruise ship foods, these problems can lead to a spoiled vacation.

* 6. Cell Phone On some islands you may actually be able to call home without having to pay for higher fees from the ship or 'calling shops" on land.

* 7. Plastic Bag A plastic bag comes in handy for keeping money, passports, or other important documents dry. Rain showers or ocean spray while on excursions can damage these items.

* 8. Back Pack Great for carrying your camera, snacks, water, sunscreen, or other items while on an excursion.

* 9. Comfortable Shoes Sandals can rub blisters on your feet. A good, comfortable pair of shoes are especially important on excursions where a lot of walking is called for.

* 10. Hat A baseball cap or another type of hat is a good way of keeping your head from getting sunburned. It doesn't take long in the tropics to get sunburned with the high sun angle.

Cruising Glacier Bay

By Jenna Grant

You can watch movies about it, you can hear about it, you can read about it, but until you partake of it, you have no clue how thrilling it is to cruise Glacier Bay.

Glacier Bay Mountain ranges with peaks over 10,000 feet, culminating in 15,320 foot high Mount Fairweather within the Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve.

Nowhere else in Alaska, or in the world, can you see the amazing sight of the tidewater glacier that spreads from a peak 3 miles high down to sea level, that is known as the Margerie Glacier.

Only 200 years ago, the beautiful fjords and cruising areas of "Glacier Bay", were buried under ice thousands of feet thick. In 1794, Capitan George Vancouver saw the face of an enormous glacier at Glacier Bay's entrance at Icy Strait.

Naturalist John Muir found in 1879, that the vast ice had withdrawn an impressive 48 miles up the Bay. Amazingly, by 1916, its face had receded 65 miles all the way back to the entrance of Tarr Inlet, where it is today.

So, in only 200 years, these massive glaciers have left us with the beautiful, 65 mile long bay we enjoy now.

The glaciers on the Bay are extremely active and quite frequently, you get to hear or see "calving". It occurs when huge parts of the glacier breaks off and falls crashing into the Bay.

The calving imitates an explosion, reverberating off the walls of the glacier, and the ice makes a giant splash as it smashes into Glacier Bay.

Along with Mother Nature's incredible playful artistry of twinkling icebergs and striking views, you will probably be entertained by the plentiful wildlife that call this section of Alaska their homefront.

Sea otters, sleek sea lions, wolves, moose, black bears, Alaskan brown bears, puffins, humpback whales, minke and orca, harbor seals, porpoises, stunning bald eagles, mountain goats, and an amazing 200 breeds of birds are a delight to watch.

Puffins are one of the most vibrant birds. They are small seabirds, pigeon-sized, that live on the open water throughout the largest part of the year. Except for breeding. They swim and ride the surface of the ocean all year long regardless of harsh weather.

From April to mid August they colonize on islands, and seacoasts to breed. They have black and white feathers and a vertical, flat, triangular shaped bill which is brightly colored especially during breeding season.

Whether in awe of the wildlife or breathing in the awesome- ness of the views, the beauty of Alaska stands out in this impressive Park.

By Brian Schmidt Platinum Quality Author

Are you planning to take a cruise- tour vacation to Alaska? Princess Cruise Lines has arguably the best Alaskan cruise-tour vacation packages available. Princess has their own sightseeing rail cars to transport you to one of their custom built lodges. To help you in your planning, we have put together a few hints and ideas on how to choose Alaskan cruise-tours.

How Long will I spend in Alaska?

Princess includes a seven night Voyage of the Glaciers cruise on every cruise-tour vacation package. You now need to decide how long you would like to spend exploring the natural beauty of Alaska's wilderness.

A fascinating three night vacation tour will take you directly to Denali Park for a two night stay at the Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge.

On a four night cruise-tour you can experience some of Alaska's highlights featuring Denali, Anchorage and Fairbanks. You have the option of staying longer at your favorite destination.

The five night tour is the most popular of all Princess cruise-tour vacation packages. Explore Alaska's interior at a more relaxed pace.

Six to eight night tours allow plenty of time to leisurely travel and explore the very heartland of Alaska. Perhaps an extended look at the highest peak in North America, Mount McKinley, is on your agenda!

You can of course add extra nights to your stay in Alaska on any of the cruise-tour packages. You can even add a vacation tour package to the Canadian Rockies.

What do I want to see?

The heart of Alaska cruise-tour goes directly to the Denali Park area of heartland Alaska. Alaska Wilderness cruise-tours include Denali with some of the other fascinating areas of Alaska. You can explore the lovely Kenai Peninsula, the history-steeped Copper River Area. Perhaps you would like to cross the Arctic Circle and visit the "Land of the Midnight Sun". The longer you stay, the more there is to see and do. It's up to you to decide where to go and what fascinating areas to see.

When will I go?

From May through September, Princess offers their fantastic cruise-tours. You will need to decide, generally, when you would like to go. If wildlife viewing is a big part of your cruise tour, perhaps July would be desirable when the young are emerging. To take advantage of "special" values, perhaps early or late in the season is best. In any case, these are very popular packages and you are well advised to book early.

What cruise to select?

Once you have determined when you would like to enjoy your cruise-tour vacation package, you must check the actual cruise schedule. Find a cruise that sails either before or after your desired tour time. You are now ready to make the next important decision - what stateroom to choose. You must decide whether you would prefer an interior room, an oceanview cabin, a balcony stateroom or a mini-suite.

As was stated earlier, these cruise-tour vacation packages with Princess Cruise Lines are very popular and do sell out. It is best to plan early so that you can take advantage of early booking discounts when available. This also guarantees that you will be able to get your desired cruise date and ship, in your desired stateroom with your desired tour package.

Alaska By Ship

By Sid Kaplan Platinum Quality Author

When was the last time you saw an eagle descend from the sky, or stood in awe as a glacier cracked and an ice berg emerged?

Imagine your sense of wonder as you glide past glacier after glacier or your first sight of a cresting whale. While we have much to be proud of in our Alberta parks, I think Alaska is mother nature’s most spectacular show piece.

This year over 30 ships are providing you the incredible delights of warm, pampering service combined with the awe of this magnificent journey.

Remember, there are no roads to Glacier Bay, nor to many other top Alaskan attractions. That’s why exploring these pristine areas by ship is such a privilege.

Cruising Alaska offers us breathtaking views of Alaska’s natural wonders, as well as nights of thrilling entertainment, fine dining, pampering service, and an endless variety of activities.

From the moment you depart the convenient port of Vancouver, this will be the vacation you have only dreamed about.

As you cruise along the Glacier route, you will experience a magical, unspoiled land where walls of ice rise up from crystal blue seas and landscapes of wild flowers give way to snow-capped peaks.

Alaska is a mecca for lovers of wildlife and vast wilderness. It is a place where you see sea lions gathering to bathe in the sun and the bald eagles circle overhead searching the waters for salmon. And you might see humpback or orca whales as they acrobatically breach the water’s surface.

You’ll be spellbound by the beauty of the Inside Passage. You’ll pass quiet bays, wooded islands, innumerable mountains and waterfalls cascading from granite cliffs - a panorama interrupted only by sightings of sea lions and whales frolicking in the waters around you.

Even more fun can be had as you visit ports as interesting as Ketchikan, southerly most port on the Inside Passage route and known as the “salmon capital of the world”. This port is also renowned the world over for its famous totems. Enjoy a stroll down famous Creek Street, the towns “red light” district; visit Misty Fjords, America’s newest national monument or attend the “Salmon Bake” and sample the local fare.

Juneau, Alaska’s capital and your first taste of the gold rush era, is a contrast of wild, natural country and thriving city. Explore the fascinating City Museum, quaint St. Nicholas Church and stop at Juneau’s favorite watering hole, the Red Dog Saloon.

The treasures beyond the city limits will beckon you too. Tour Mendanhall Glacier by motorcoach or helicopter. This river of ice, with craggy rock sentinels 3,000 feet above sea level is a natural wonder.

Skagway, a magnet for gold-seekers in the late 1890’s, was referred to as the “roughest town on earth” with its over 80 saloons. You can relive the racy Klondike days in this colourful turn-of-the-century town where cancan dancers and other entertainers in 1890’s garb will welcome you or take an authentic horse drawn taxi into town and explore the “Trail of 98” museum.

The plank sidewalks, false front buildings and narrow-gauge White Pass and Yukon Railroad will make you feel as if you were back in the days of the Gold Rush.

On northbound cruises, you’ll also visit Sitka. When Alaska was still Russian territory, this was her glittering cultural centre in the West. Today, evidence of Russian culture can be found in the priceless icons and paintings of the onion-domed St. Michael’s Cathedral. Remnants of Sitka’s Indian culture are preserved in the National Historic Park.

A cruise to Alaska us the ideal vacation for couples, families, single people, honeymooners and fun-lovers of all ages and interests.

And there is no other way to do it with so much ease, affordability and excitement than by modern cruise ships.

See Alaska as Never Before: Alaska Inside Passage Cruises

By Ron Richards

Between the Alaskan mainland and its islands, lies an intriguing waterway best known as the inside passage. Abundant in wildlife and breathtaking beauty, the inside passage affords visitors an experience that cannot be found anywhere in Alaska or in the world.

From the waterway of the passage, one can look upon some of the most magnificent natural scenery to be found such as coastal rainforests, deep blue fjords and tidewater glaciers. Also to be found in the passage are numerous species of wildlife including humpback whales, sea lions and seabirds.
Because of the awe-inspiring beauty of the passage and since many destinations along the Alaska inside passage are only accessible by plane or boat, inside passage cruises have become one of the most popular tourist attractions of the state.

Few people have visited Alaska without experiencing once in a lifetime moments. Towering tidewater glaciers offer natural beauty that usually is only fully appreciated with an up close and personal view that only a cruise through the inland waterways can afford. From this vantage point you will stand in awe of these mighty glaciers that reach several hundred feet in height and enjoy plentiful wildlife viewing such as humpback whales, orcas, sea lions, mountain goats, brown bears and bald eagles. You will also be stricken speechless by the sheer beauty of the inside passage's botanical gardens, spectacular waterfalls, and the Alaskan sunrise as seen from the cruise ship.

Alaska inside passage cruises are also popular for their exotic port destinations. Some of the most popular ports of call on the inside passage are Juneau, Skagway, Haines, Ketchikan and Victoria. Certain cruises even give passengers the opportunity to land on Annette Island and to be greeted by the Tsimshian elders of Metlakatla.

Best of all, Alaska inside passage cruises are affordable. You can choose from one-day inland glacier cruise packages which are as priced as low as $69 per person to a luxurious six night cruise on a deluxe designer yacht for as little as $4,000 per person. Of course there is a wide range of cruise options that fall between these two extremes.

As you can see, there is a little bit of something for everybody aboard one of Alaska's inside passage cruise ships: a change of pace, exquisite scenery, and memories to last a lifetime.

A lifelong Alaskan, Ron Richards lives in the beautiful Matanuska Valley. Ron invites you to come and see Alaska. One excellent way to enjoy Alaska is by taking an affordable Alaska cruise vacation.

Alaska Cruise - Expert Guide

By John Metcalfe Platinum Quality Author

The Alaska cruise is a breathtaking adventure that
you'll never forget. Giant snow-capped mountains,
sparkling glaciers, thick pine forests rising up from the
shoreline and abundant wildlife vie for your attention
in this dramatic landscape. Towns and villages brimming
with history tell a story of the Great Land that will
endear Alaska to you forever.

An Alaska cruise typically departs from Seattle in
Washington State or from Vancouver in British Columbia.
Winters are very harsh in Alaska, so the main cruising
season is confined to the summer months, typically
between May and September.

The most popular Alaska cruise route takes passengers
on a one week round-trip up the Alaskan coastline and
through the Inside Passage. This route takes in the
ports of Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway and Sitka in the
extreme southeast of Alaska. Other cruise routes run
to Prince William Sound near the city of Anchorage,
and also along the Alaska Peninsula and into the Bering
Sea. These longer cruises are often one-way, requiring
passengers to make their return journey by train or
plane.

Ketchikan is well worth a visit alone for the Tongass
National Forest - the most northerly rainforest on the
North American continent. It is more than eight times
the size of the Yellowstone National Park, and offers
the ultimate in adventure tours where you'll find rich
salmon runs and grizzly bears. Ketchikan is also home
to the world's largest collection of totem poles.
These can be found at the Totem Heritage Center Museum.

Juneau, often known as 'little San Francisco', is
Alaska's capital. Here you can experience life in a
true northern city. The Mendenhall Glacier is sure
worth a visit, as is the Sawyer Glacier a little
further to the South.

Skagway is Alaska's gold-rush town. It is well
preserved and offers access to the Klondike Gold Rush
National Historical Park. Disembark at this port and
view the way of the world famous White Pass railroad,
before panning for gold in this northern outpost. And
when you're done with the gold, why not take time out
to watch the whales near Sitka - a haven for these
beautiful creatures all year round.

For the more adventurous, an Alaska cruise can take
in Kodiak Island in the Gulf of Alaska. Known as
Alaska's 'Emerald Isle' Kodiak Island takes visitors
back to the time when the first inhabitants settled on
the island more than 7,500 years ago. You can even
locate Alaska's oldest parish here on Kodiak Island...

Places to See On Your Alaska Cruise, Welcome To Juneau!!

By Earl Lear

Well my sister in law is in town this week and we’re playing tourist here in Juneau. Very funny how folks react to us because we’re locals.

Anyway, we went to the Gold Creek Salmon Bake in Juneau last night and we had a blast. You have to think of it not as a dinner but more of an experience. The grilled salmon was very good although I was disappointed that they were using Chum Salmon as the choice of the evening. Local Alaskans don’t eat Chum Salmon!!

It wasn’t until I finished eating that I noticed that it was Chum and actually it was rather good. It depends on what time of year that you come here as to what kind of salmon that you’ll get. Early in the Alaska cruise season (May-June) you’ll get King Salmon but in early July Chum salmon are more available. Sockeye salmon are next in line and they happen to be my personal favorite. They call them reds because their meat is more of a red color then the traditional ‘salmon’ color that you get from Chinook (Kings) or silvers (Coho) or even humpies (Pink Salmon). Chum tends to have more of a whiter color and most of the seafood processing plants actually add food coloring to spoof people into buying Alaskan Salmon for next to nothing.

With that in mind for around $25.00 per person you get an all you can eat meal of grilled salmon, potato salad, Caesar salad, baked beans, cornbread as well as cole slaw. It’s a pretty good deal and the salmon is usually wonderful and cooked to perfection. The cooks there know how to cook the salmon right since they barbecue so much of it on a daily basis.

You can treat yourself to an Alaskan Amber or any of the local award winning Alaskan Brewery’s products or get a glass of wine if you choose. They also have coffee, tea and hot chocolate for the non-drinking folks.

While eating you’ll be treated to a live performance of folk music, there’s always someone playing a guitar for entertainment.

After dinner you can walk by the side of Salmon Creek all the way up to the waterfall which by the way is a beautiful place to take some pictures, it’s the perfect backdrop. Once at the waterfall you can try your skills gold panning and even a beginner can find some powdered gold here. Salmon creek was actually one of best place to find gold in Juneau around the turn of the 1900’s.

All along the trail (which is only a couple hundred yards in length) they have information plaques that display information on the local plants as well as stories complete with pictures of the life cycle of the salmon.

Once back to the ‘camp’ don’t forget to check out their little gift shop! The shop is first class and my wife dropped about $50.00 in gifts that incorporated Alaskan gold in them. Overall she got a great bargain for the gifts.

And before you leave don’t forget to take the kids over to the fire pits where there are plenty of marshmallows and sticks to roast them on. My kids absolutely loved this part of the trip and we thought that we would have to hose the stickiness off of them before we left.

The whole experience should take you about two and a half hours to complete and it’s well worth the price. So when taking an Alaskan cruise and stopping in Juneau don’t miss the Gold Creek Salmon Bake!!

Alaska - Easy Cruise Guide

By Stan Trof

WHAT TO SEE: Legendary beautiful scenery of Alaska- magnificent coastal fjords, rugged glaciers, vast evergreen forests, sky-high mountains, 7 of which are the tallest peaks in North America (to see Mt. McKinley, North America's tallest peak, you'll need to take a tour to the shore into the Denali National Park), abundant land and marine wildlife- moose, kodiak and grizzly bears, caribou, dall sheep, puffin, otters, seals, humpback and killer whales, dolphins, bald-headed eagles and much more. Shore excursions are optional, as well as guided tours in a cruise ship's port of call. They are offered in all Alaska ports and cities and are a great way to enrich your cruise experience with visiting coastal attractions, historical places, challenging yourself in kayaking, helicopter tours, mountain biking,...

CRUISE LENGTH: 7 days on average. There are some 11 and 14 day cruises which include more ports of call and more glacier touring. There are 2 different kinds of cruises available: Inside Passage Cruise: roundtrip departure from Vancouver/ Seattle, usually 7 days long. You cruise the inside passage through the islands offshore from British Columbia and Alaska. Stops usually include Ketchikan, Sitka, Skagway and Juneau. Gulf of Alaska Cruise (or Glacier Route Cruise): You cruise one-way northbound from Vancouver/ Seattle or one-way south from Seward, Alaska. You will see more glaciers on this route and an additional port or two.

WHEN TO GO: The usual Alaska cruise season lasts from early May to late September. Alaskan summers are cool, daytime highs in these months range from 10 to 27 degrees Celsius (50 to 80 Fahrenheit). May and June tend to be the drier months, July is the warmest one. June and July are the best months to watch Humpback and Orca whales, White-Sided dolphins. An additional bonus to an Alaskan cruise vacation is that in summer the days are much longer than they are further south. This is the land of the midnight sun. Your longest days will be in June and July (up to 20-21 hours of daylight) and will offer you many opportunities to enjoy active glaciers. Early and late season cruises (May and September) tend to be slightly cheaper and the ports of call are less crowded. You can check next week weather forecast for Anchorage here.

ALASKA CRUISE TIPS: Northern weather can be unpredictable. Consider taking with you and wearing multiple layers of clothes in response to a wide variety of temperatures and weather conditions. What to pack : waterproof and warm jacket, a sweater, light gloves, rain gear, sun glasses and a warm hat for deck strolling or touring on the shore. You also may find useful binoculars, camera, camcorder, film, batteries and walking shoes. If you need a hair dryer, pack one; not all cruise ships have hair dryers in the cabins. Bargain hunters should look for last minute deals as the last rooms are often sold at very low prices.

Pick the right cruise ship for your style,- some ships are more traditional, other more stylish, elegant, some offer more choices for children, other are more seniors-oriented. The cruise comparison chart below should help you in making the correct choice. Check your cruise itinerary, almost every ship usually includes several formal dress code nights. Dark business suit or a tuxedo would do the thing. Alaska cruises tend to be more casual than other destinatons but items such as cutoff t-shirts, halter tops and torn jeans are still not permitted in the dining area.Tipping is usually $10 per passenger per day. We recommend you to book a stateroom with a balcony. Theview on an Alaska cruise is always changing- mountains, shores, wildlife, marine animals, glaciers, or quaint waterfront communities. You can enjoy it from the privacy of your own balcony, escaping crowded decks.

We wish you a nice and safe cruising!

The Alaska Cruise- A Living Memory

By Colin Hartness

The Alaska cruise is a major attraction drawing vacationers with its majestic scenery, gleaming glaciers, exotic wildlife, and Native American culture. Ships are normally on a seven-day excursion package to Alaska and they stop at four ports on their passage, visiting Hubbard Glacier or Glacier Bay National Park. You may like to opt for an extended cruise-tour comprehensive package where you go by train around Alaska and it includes lodging and seeing the sights in Denali National Park.

Due to weather hindrances, cruises to Alaska are strictly restricted during the summer months from early May to Mid Sept. June, July and August are the peak seasons when the average daily temperatures reach up to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. The best time to sail is May and September as temperatures soar around 50 degrees. Luxury vessels and midsize ships sail from Vancouver, BC and Seattle. At both embarkment and disembarkment points, you are able to visit the ports of Juneau, Ketchikan and Skagway.

The wonder world of Alaska is waiting for you. The mountains, waterfalls, the humpback whales and frolicking sea lions, the breathtaking forests, wildlife and the snowcapped mountains-is all there for you. Alaska is fascinating, explorative and full of new discoveries. Each new day ushers in new surprises. Alaska is the most memorable place on the earth. You see the breathtaking view of Mt. McKinley as it rises grandly over Denali National Park. Imagine yourself bird watching, hiking through the glacier waterfalls outside Juneau and sea kayak on the Tongass National Park harbor.

Alaska is a place full of adventures with its one hundred thousand glaciers and 3 million lakes. To enjoy the Alaska experience your first option should be a Gulf of Alaska cruise tour, along with Voyage of the Glaciers cruise with an option of land tours. You won’t soon forget the Freestyle Cruising Alaska offers.

Experience the early frontier existence from America’s oldest Russian Orthodox Church in the San Diego’s Gaslamp District, and the vineries of Santa Barbara. You will enjoy a trolley car ride to Chinatown or Fisherman’s Wharf. As your ship sails through Glacier Bay, you experience nature to the fullest.

Norwegian Cruise Alaska - Why to Take an NCL Alaska Cruise

By Scott Miller

Norwegian cruise Alaska routes have become increasingly popular over the past few years. So why are NCL Alaska cruise routes so popular?

NCL currently operates three ships in Alaska each summer, two sailing out of Vancouver (the Norwegian Pearl and the Norwegian Star) and one out of Vancouver (the Norwegian Sun). These ships all sail round trip itineraries exclusively to the Inside Passage of lower Alaska and back. One of the reasons so many people simply love NCL Alaska cruises is because their ships are so new and equipped with all the latest amenities (the Pearl actually has a bowling alley!) If you are looking for ultra-modern ships, then NCL is a great cruise line to consider, as their ships are the youngest of all the fleets in Alaska.

Another reason NCL is so popular is that their ships offer the unique Freestyle Cruising concept. As a part of this more relaxed and contemporary approach to cruising, old style large dining rooms have been replaced by a large number of smaller restaurants, each specializing in a different type of cuisine. Guests are free to eat whenever they want, and the dress is generally informal.

Another reason NCL cruises are so popular in Alaska is their great selection of itineraries. The Pearl includes stops in Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, and, best of all, Glacier Bay National Park (it's one of only a handful of ships currently allowed to enter the park). The Star and the Sun instead visit Tracy Arm Fjord, another spectacular glacier viewing spot.

If you are looking for shore excursions, NCL offers plenty in each of the Alaska cruise ports, from flight plane rides and whale watches in Ketchikan to dog sledding atop glaciers in Juneau to train rides and bald eagle viewing in Skagway.

You really will see and experience so much on any of these Norwegian Cruise Alaska routes. They are a great way to experience Alaska in relaxed style with great service and world-class cruise ship facilities.

Cruise to Alaska - Cruises Along the Inside Passage

By Scott Russell

So have you been considering a cruise to Alaska? Cruises along Alaska's Inside Passage are simply spectacular. The scenery is some of the most beautiful on Earth, including stunning, misty fjords, quaint port towns, and glaciers that are so vast and so powerful that seeing them for the first time literally takes your breath away.

The three most popular port towns along the Alaskan cruise route are the quaint island fishing village of Ketchikan, the picturesque state capitol of Juneau, and the rugged, historic gold rush town of Skagway, which also serves a the gateway to Canada's pristine Yukon Territory.

Each of these ports has its own unique character, and every one has literally dozens of options for shore excursions. In Ketchikan, you can catch a short float plane ride to nearby Misty Fjords National Monument, one of the region's hidden gems, often called the Yosemite of the North. From Juneau, a great option is a helicopter tour and dogsled ride atop one of countless nearby glaciers. And in Skagway, the excursion you just can't miss is the train ride into the Yukon.

Some cruises instead stop in the island town of Sitka, which is rich in history that dates back to the Russian era in Alaska. Other cruises also stop in Victoria or Prince Rupert, British Columbia (particularly cruises out of Seattle).

Of course, you'll experience many of this region's most amazing sights right from the deck of your cruise ship. If you're lucky, your ship will stop in Glacier Bay National Park, where mountains rise up some 15,000 from the pristine fjords below, and numerous tidewater glaciers are still actively carving the landscape. Glacier Bay is simply one of the most beautiful spots on Earth, and is my favorite spot along the Alaskan cruise route (and in all of Alaska, for that matter).

Since the number of ships into Glacier Bay is limited by the US Park Service, many cruises instead visit alternate glacier viewing locations including the Hubbard Glacier and Tracy Arm Fjord. Either of these options is a reasonable stand-in for Glacier Bay. The Hubbard Glacier is Alaska's largest and it is HUGE. Tracy Arm is located within the protected waters of the Inside Passage, and is beautiful in its own right.

No matter which itinerary you choose, you are bound to have an incredible, exciting, and unforgettable cruise to Alaska - cruises along the Inside Passage are consistently rated amongst the favorite routes in the world, and the scenery really defies description. You simply have to see Alaska to believe just how beautiful it is.

Cruise Line Spotlight - Holland America Line's Eurodam

By Carrie Finley-Bajak

Holland America Line began 135 years ago as the Netherlands-America Steamship Company, a cargo and passenger shipping line that sailed between Rotterdam and the Americas. Today, it is one of the world's leading premium leisure cruise lines. Its elegant, mid-size ships sail nearly 500 different itineraries to 314 ports of call on seven continents.

The recent addition of the new ms Eurodam brought the total number of ships in Holland America's fleet to 14. The Eurodam, a 2,104-passenger ship, is the first in Holland America's new Signature Class. The ship was officially dedicated by Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands on July 1. After sailing in the Baltic region this summer, the Eurodam will cross the Atlantic to sail the coast of New England this fall.

The Eurodam has a number of luxurious features that are new to the cruise line, such as Spa Staterooms. There are 56 of these special cabins, which vary from inside staterooms to suites with private verandahs. All are located on the top two decks, in close proximity to the Greenhouse Spa and Salon. They also have special spa amenities, such as water features that provide soothing, ambient background sound. Ten of the Spa Staterooms located on the Observation Deck have floor-to-ceiling windows and scalloped verandahs for spectacular views.

Like staterooms across the fleet, those on the Eurodam provide passengers with premium amenities such as waffle weave terry cloth robes, Egyptian cotton towels, flat panel TVs, DVD players, lighted make-up mirrors and massaging shower heads.

The Eurodam also has new dining options, including a pan-Asian restaurant called Tamarind. Lunch at Tamarind features dim sum, the classic Asian dumplings, with fusion sauces for dipping. For dinner, guests can choose one of a variety of Asian-inspired entrees or Rijsttafel, a Dutch adaptation of the traditional Indonesian dinner. Rijsttafel features rice served with a variety of flavorful side dishes, including satay, steamed vegetables, braised poultry and seafood steamed in banana leaves.

While planning and building the Eurodam, Holland America also enhanced the rest of its fleet through its Signature of Excellence initiative. The cruise line invested $425 million in enhancements to the ships' public spaces, accommodations, dining rooms, service programs and itineraries.

Another great feature of the Eurodam are the airy new cabanas available for rent on the Observation and Lido Decks. These super private cabanas allow sweeping views of the ocean, privacy, and a louge type feel.

* In tropical and warm climates, cruise season can really last all year long, so cruise don't change in price much from month to month. However, in Alaska, there are several months when it is very cold, making cruises less expensive. There is less for you to do on your shore excursions because of the weather and it isn't going to be as nice sitting out on the deck as it would be in the summer, but you can still find plenty of unique ways to fill your days. If you purchase tickets right before or after the tourist season, you'll still have fair weather without the outrageous prices. Tip #2: Go for the packaged deals.
* If you can buy your airfare, ground transportation and your cruise for one low price, you'll be able to get more out of the entire cruise and spend less money overall. Also, look for vacations that might include week-long trips before or after the cruise, so that you can see more of the countryside and enjoy more of what Alaska has to offer you without paying expensive ship lodging prices. Work with a travel agent to really take advantage of budget rates on packaged deals. Tip #3: Think both big and small.
* Something that you can do that usually works for tourists is checking with the lesser-known cruise lines to see if they're offering any deals. At the same time, don't forget about the big names in cruising. They often offer specials for families, seniors, members of the military, larger groups, and so forth. Tip #4: Choose your room carefully
* One of the things that cruise lines might do is offer an interior room for much less money than one on the outside of the ship. Since you probably won't be in the room for very long you might want to consider doing this because it will give you a chance to get a cheaper deal on your cruise overall. Keep in mind, however, that interior rooms are very dark, even during the day, because they have no windows. Tip #5: Plan a land-based Alaskan vacation and go on a day cruise.
Lastly, Alaska offers a number of budget-friendly options in regards to hotels and campgrounds. You can even consider taking an RV through this great state, which will really help you save money. To get that cruise fix, book an afternoon glacier or whale-watching cruise. That way, you'll be able to enjoy time on the water without breaking the bank! There really are cruise options for every budget, so don't let the cost stop you from planning a great Alaskan vacation.
