Thanksgiving is a terrific holiday. Many businesses close both Thursday and Friday. The weather in most parts of the world is still manageable, and then there's all that food.

As much as we like a traditional Thanksgiving dinner with friends and family, a few years ago, we did a cruise over the Thanksgiving holiday, and it was really fun. Plus, it was nice having someone else do all the cooking - and then clean it all up.

If you've never thought of taking a cruise over the holidays, you might want to reconsider. And if your family and friends are available to join you, so much the better.

Because repositioning cruises are usually such a bargain, taking one over Thanksgiving can be an affordable way to create a special holiday that everyone will remember for years to come. There's plenty of time to bond during the days at sea, and the atmosphere on board is festive.

Nowadays, many cruise ships have bars with big-screen TVs, so you'll likely be able to follow all the big games. And instead of spending the day in the kitchen, mom can spend it in a deck chair.

This year, most of the repositioning cruises are transatlantic crossings. So if you have some extra time, you can see some of Europe before you board your ship.

Seabourn Legend is one of the most luxurious cruise ships in the world. The 208 passengers - usually fewer on repositioning cruises - are indulged with delicious food and impeccable service. Travelers who love Italy can board the ship on November 13 and call at Livorno (for Florence or Pisa), and three ports in Spain before reaching Malaga. Those with less time can board Legend there a week later for the 11-day voyage to Fort Lauderdale. Cruisers will celebrate Thanksgiving dinner at sea, perhaps in the fantastic Charlie Palmer restaurant.

Azamara Journey is a mid-sized ship - 694 passengers - with an enviable crew-to-passenger ratio, a great wine program, and very good service. On November 15, she sails from Rome and stops in Cartagena, Gibraltar, and Tenerife. A week later, she arrives in Nassau for a port call. Passengers will disembark in Miami on November 29.

Repositioning cruises that sails from Portugal and Spain.

One of the old Renaissance vessels, the 700-passenger Oceania Regatta offers its guests half a dozen restaurants, a Canyon Ranch SpaClub, and lots of ways to keep fit. On November 13, she leaves Barcelona for Hamilton, Bermuda, stopping in Tangier and Funchal along the way. The ship spends the night in Bermuda, giving cruisers the opportunity to enjoy the evening ashore. She arrives in Miami on November 27.

One of the two smaller Windstar ships, Wind Spirit carries just 148 passengers. She's an ideal choice for those who love sailing and yachting. She leaves Lisbon on November 20 for a two-week cruise to St. Maarten in the Caribbean. There are no stops, so passengers will have no choice but to completely unwind, relax, and enjoy life at sea.

I mean honestly, where would you rather spend a week, stuck in a pool surrounded by barbed wire fencing for your safety, keeping you in, and the baddies out? The nearest town is even too dangerous after hours to walk through and relax in. No no, ain't my scene and I'm male. Imagine if you are a single female tourist who wants a week away from home. Where are you going to go where you feel more safe than on a singles cruises. Park your car at the terminal, hop out, take your labeled bags to the luggage area space, designated for your ship, and leave them there. Walk on the ship, passport in hand and there you go. 50 stewards to greet you at the door and escort you to your cabin where your bags will follow shortly. From here on in the rest is smooth sailing.

After checking you have your life jacket in your cabin (formality),and your assigned table number for dinner, with your ships paper in hand, get out and explore, find your way around the ship, know where to go. Where´s the front and where´s the aft. What deck am I on. Wheres the food buffet being served now, where´s my table at dinner, where´s the dining room, where are the shops, (they will open after sailing for tax reasons along with the casino).

Day 1 is a good day to reserve any special beauty treatments, as there booking spots wont be full yet and you will have all the time options available. Want to book a tour, the desk should be open now or if not check your paper and it will show all the times of opening and serving till.

3 Obstacles to Cruise Harmony

Working as crew on a cruise ship is a singular experience. For those who choose to endure the tribulations, it is an existence that will absolutely change your life, surely for the better. Whether living or just learning of this lifestyle, focusing on the negatives must be avoided because they are misleading: there are simply too many tribulations to endure to rationally justify the lifestyle. Yet like most things in life, the rewards are much more than merely the sum of challenges overcome.

That being said, there are three barriers to companionship at sea that one needs to be aware of. Each of these can be overcome with a little maturity, but because ship life is a necessarily transient lifestyle it caters to the young and inexperienced. Armchair adventurers and cubicle dreamers commonly focus on the promise of working in exotic ports, imagining they are tackling the world at large. In fact, it is a small world indeed that takes you from port to port, but it is just as foreign as any on the map.

The Language Barrier
When first starting work as a waiter with Carnival Cruise Lines, I thought my native English would be an advantage. Wrong! English alone is spoken on cruise ships in guest areas, of course, but in the few off hours crew obtain from their hectic schedules, anything goes. While the occasional Australian or Canadian may relax in their English tongue, we are quite alone. The crew is from all over the earth and for most English is a second, if not third or even fourth language.

In after-hours, most crew split into national groups and speak their own languages. When a cluster of, say, Romanians, are off work together they naturally switch to Romanian. Most are considerate enough to maintain English when a foreigner is with them, but after a drink or three native tongues take over. I use Romanians as an example because I had visited there numerous times and was familiar with their language. Yet of all the nationalities I stereotyped, they were the least inclined to use English for me. Whether they were merely insensitive or assumed I understood more, I don't know.

Few things make one feel further from home than being surrounded by a sea of foreign-speaking people.

The Cultural Barrier
There are times when something familiar is all you want, when pop culture is a comfort. Most people don't realize how much time they spend talking about sports, TV, music, literature, or movies... until they can't. I am not a sports fan, yet I chafed at only seeing cricket and soccer on TV. I don't like big Hollywood blockbusters, but that was the only thing I had in common with most crew, other than work. Of television most only knew Friends or Dallas, or just maybe Married... With Children. As an American, I was truly alone on cruise ships. I found myself praying for Canadians, the most likely to understand me, though even they had vastly different forms of entertainment (oh, too bad you missed the curling championship, eh?)

The feeling of being alone in a crowd is acute at sea. Americans are used to and expect an unparalleled amount of personal space and privacy, no doubt due to our prosperity and vast land resources. Most of the world would never dream of having their own bedroom as a child growing up, nor even sharing it with but a single sibling. This becomes apparent at sea when personal space is limited to merely your own tiny bunk.

Bodies are everywhere... even in your own cabin! Roommates constantly engage in sex in shared cabins, or throw raucous parties. Yet even the polar opposite can pose a problem: I had one cabin mate who was a born-again Christian insomniac from India who would talk psalm until exhaustion took him. Even in my bunk, head and feet pressed against the walls and my curtain drawn, I was subjected to a nightly sermon until the wee hours of the morning! Another would blast a 40-part Chinese miniseries dubbed over in Thai at high volume despite my pleadings for quiet.

The Body Barrier
All those bodies were constantly changing, too. You have no time to build a rapport with most people around you because they are on their way to somewhere else. Every week dozens of crew come and go on the big ships. Friendships form and disappear with amazing rapidity at sea. In such an inhospitable environment you cling to whomever clings back, and then suddenly they are gone. Most affection is merely a band-aid. The few couples I knew that came to sea together all left apart, broken by the pressures of ship life. More often the women became empowered by their brush with American ideals and refused to blindly obey their husbands any longer, invariably leading to a split.

Not just bodies abound, mind you, but really nice ones. Because crew are invariably young and attractive people from all over the earth, naughty things happen. Here are a few items to pack before heading on your next cruise to the Caribbean, Bermuda, the Bahamas, or Mexico.

* 1. Ambient Noise Maker It's possible that the guests next door may keep you up longer than you would like to stay up. Kids running up and down the halls or neighbors that have had one too many to drink, can disturb your sleep. An ambient noise maker can help drown out the background noise and give you a better night's sleep.

* 2. Snorkel If you are taking a cruise to tropical waters, there is a good chance that snorkeling is on your itinerary. Snorkeling tours usually have swim fins, swim mask, and a snorkel included free of charge on your excursion. You need to think though - how many mouths have been on that snorkel?

* 3. Camera Cruise lines have many photographers that capture great pictures while you are on your cruise. The problem is that they don't usually go on excursions with you. I would recommend a decent, but not too big or expensive of a camera to take with you. A big camera can get too heavy and an expensive one may make you a target of crime.

* 4. Sea Sick Medicine You never know when the rolling seas will make your stomach sick. There are patches and other medications to help ease sea sickness.

* 5. Diarrhea Medicine Yuck. From a bad drink of water on a tropical island to too many preservatives in some cruise ship foods, these problems can lead to a spoiled vacation.

* 6. Cell Phone On some islands you may actually be able to call home without having to pay for higher fees from the ship or 'calling shops" on land.

* 7. Plastic Bag A plastic bag comes in handy for keeping money, passports, or other important documents dry. Rain showers or ocean spray while on excursions can damage these items.

* 8. Back Pack Great for carrying your camera, snacks, water, sunscreen, or other items while on an excursion.

* 9. Comfortable Shoes Sandals can rub blisters on your feet. A good, comfortable pair of shoes are especially important on excursions where a lot of walking is called for.

* 10. Hat A baseball cap or another type of hat is a good way of keeping your head from getting sunburned. It doesn't take long in the tropics to get sunburned with the high sun angle.

Cruising Glacier Bay

You can watch movies about it, you can hear about it, you can read about it, but until you partake of it, you have no clue how thrilling it is to cruise Glacier Bay.

Glacier Bay Mountain ranges with peaks over 10,000 feet, culminating in 15,320 foot high Mount Fairweather within the Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve.

Nowhere else in Alaska, or in the world, can you see the amazing sight of the tidewater glacier that spreads from a peak 3 miles high down to sea level, that is known as the Margerie Glacier.

Only 200 years ago, the beautiful fjords and cruising areas of "Glacier Bay", were buried under ice thousands of feet thick. In 1794, Capitan George Vancouver saw the face of an enormous glacier at Glacier Bay's entrance at Icy Strait.

Naturalist John Muir found in 1879, that the vast ice had withdrawn an impressive 48 miles up the Bay. Amazingly, by 1916, its face had receded 65 miles all the way back to the entrance of Tarr Inlet, where it is today.

So, in only 200 years, these massive glaciers have left us with the beautiful, 65 mile long bay we enjoy now.

The glaciers on the Bay are extremely active and quite frequently, you get to hear or see "calving". It occurs when huge parts of the glacier breaks off and falls crashing into the Bay.

The calving imitates an explosion, reverberating off the walls of the glacier, and the ice makes a giant splash as it smashes into Glacier Bay.

Along with Mother Nature's incredible playful artistry of twinkling icebergs and striking views, you will probably be entertained by the plentiful wildlife that call this section of Alaska their homefront.

Sea otters, sleek sea lions, wolves, moose, black bears, Alaskan brown bears, puffins, humpback whales, minke and orca, harbor seals, porpoises, stunning bald eagles, mountain goats, and an amazing 200 breeds of birds are a delight to watch.

Puffins are one of the most vibrant birds. They are small seabirds, pigeon-sized, that live on the open water throughout the largest part of the year. Except for breeding.They swim and ride the surface of the ocean all year long regardless of harsh weather.

From April to mid August they colonize on islands, and seacoasts to breed. They have black and white feathers and a vertical, flat, triangular shaped bill which is brightly colored especially during breeding season.

Whether in awe of the wildlife or breathing in the awesome- ness of the views, the beauty of Alaska stands out in this impressive Park.

The Alaska cruise is a breathtaking adventure that

Places to See On Your Alaska Cruise, Welcome To Juneau!!

Well my sister in law is in town this week and we’re playing tourist here in Juneau. Very funny how folks react to us because we’re locals.

Anyway, we went to the Gold Creek Salmon Bake in Juneau last night and we had a blast. You have to think of it not as a dinner but more of an experience. The grilled salmon was very good although I was disappointed that they were using Chum Salmon as the choice of the evening. Local Alaskans don’t eat Chum Salmon!!

It wasn’t until I finished eating that I noticed that it was Chum and actually it was rather good. It depends on what time of year that you come here as to what kind of salmon that you’ll get. Early in the Alaska cruise season (May-June) you’ll get King Salmon but in early July Chum salmon are more available. Sockeye salmon are next in line and they happen to be my personal favorite. They call them reds because their meat is more of a red color then the traditional ‘salmon’ color that you get from Chinook (Kings) or silvers (Coho) or even humpies (Pink Salmon). Chum tends to have more of a whiter color and most of the seafood processing plants actually add food coloring to spoof people into buying Alaskan Salmon for next to nothing.

With that in mind for around $25.00 per person you get an all you can eat meal of grilled salmon, potato salad, Caesar salad, baked beans, cornbread as well as cole slaw. It’s a pretty good deal and the salmon is usually wonderful and cooked to perfection. The cooks there know how to cook the salmon right since they barbecue so much of it on a daily basis.

You can treat yourself to an Alaskan Amber or any of the local award winning Alaskan Brewery’s products or get a glass of wine if you choose. They also have coffee, tea and hot chocolate for the non-drinking folks.

While eating you’ll be treated to a live performance of folk music, there’s always someone playing a guitar for entertainment.

After dinner you can walk by the side of Salmon Creek all the way up to the waterfall which by the way is a beautiful place to take some pictures, it’s the perfect backdrop. Once at the waterfall you can try your skills gold panning and even a beginner can find some powdered gold here. Salmon creek was actually one of best place to find gold in Juneau around the turn of the 1900’s.

All along the trail (which is only a couple hundred yards in length) they have information plaques that display information on the local plants as well as stories complete with pictures of the life cycle of the salmon.

Once back to the ‘camp’ don’t forget to check out their little gift shop! The shop is first class and my wife dropped about $50.00 in gifts that incorporated Alaskan gold in them. Overall she got a great bargain for the gifts.

And before you leave don’t forget to take the kids over to the fire pits where there are plenty of marshmallows and sticks to roast them on. My kids absolutely loved this part of the trip and we thought that we would have to hose the stickiness off of them before we left.

The whole experience should take you about two and a half hours to complete and it’s well worth the price. So when taking an Alaskan cruise and stopping in Juneau don’t miss the Gold Creek Salmon Bake!!

CRUISE LENGTH: 7 days on average.There are some 11 and 14 day cruises which include more ports of call and more glacier touring. You cruise the inside passage through the islands offshore from British Columbia and Alaska. Stops usually include Ketchikan, Sitka, Skagway and Juneau. You will see more glaciers on this route and an additional port or two.

May and June tend to be the drier months, July is the warmest one. June and July are the best months to watch Humpback and Orca whales, White-Sided dolphins. ALASKA CRUISE TIPS: Northern weather can be unpredictable. Consider taking with you and wearing multiple layers of clothes in response to a wide variety of temperatures and weather conditions. What to pack : waterproof and warm jacket, a sweater, light gloves, rain gear, sun glasses and a warm hat for deck strolling or touring on the shore. You also may find useful binoculars, camera, camcorder, film, batteries and walking shoes. If you need a hair dryer, pack one; not all cruise ships have hair dryers in the cabins. Pick the right cruise ship for your style,- some ships are more traditional, other more stylish, elegant, some offer more choices for children, other are more seniors-oriented. Tracy Arm is located within the protected waters of the Inside Passage, and is beautiful in its own right.

No matter which itinerary you choose, you are bound to have an incredible, exciting, and unforgettable cruise to Alaska - cruises along the Inside Passage are consistently rated amongst the favorite routes in the world, and the scenery really defies description. You simply have to see Alaska to believe just how beautiful it is.

Holland America Line began 135 years ago as the Netherlands-America Steamship Company, a cargo and passenger shipping line that sailed between Rotterdam and the Americas. The recent addition of the new ms Eurodam brought the total number of ships in Holland America's fleet to 14. The Eurodam, a 2,104-passenger ship, is the first in Holland America's new Signature Class. The ship was officially dedicated by Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands on July 1. After sailing in the Baltic region this summer, the Eurodam will cross the Atlantic to sail the coast of New England this fall.

The Triumph is an older, not as well designed ship, in the Triumph class of ship sailing under the Carnival banner. The theme of this ship is cities. You can have dinner in the Paris dining room or watch a stage show in the Rome lounge, or enjoy a drink in the New York Bar.

Most of the Carnival ships are designed for fun, hence the advertising tag, "the Funships". Your cruise on board one of these funships will be less elegant and the service will not be as good as on board one of the more expensive and therefore, more refined other cruise lines such as Princess or Holland America. It is for this reason that the Carnival ships are difficult to review.

The design of the ship can best be described as unfortunate. It is not possible to get all the way across the Promenade deck of the ship without going up and down the stairs. And it is most unfortunate that you almost always have to go through the casino to get anywhere on decks 3 and 4. But the major flaw of this ship is the fact that it is the only vessel I have ever sailed on that does not have an around the ship walking track. The only way to go for a fitness walk around the ship is either on the running track or the Lido deck.

Since the predominate theme of the Carnival ships are fun, more than luxury, service or class, a lot of your enjoyment of the cruise will be in the Cruise director and his or her staff. It is especially important to take full advantage of all the seemingly crazy activities on board the ship. On my recent carnival cruises I have performed Island dancing, been runner-up on Carnival fear factor, and even been a finalist on Carnival Idol. These sorts of activities are as far from my homelife persona as one could be but I really enjoy my cruises and you should too.

When boarding this Holland America Line vessel, the first thing that you will notice is the attention to detail in the decor of the ship. The Zuiderdam's atrium features a Waterford Crystal Seahorse which sets the mood for exquisite pieces of art to be seen throughout this elegant ship. At midship, each side features outdoor elevators which allows you a beautiful view of the ocean while you are in the elevator.

But the true beauty of this ship is its crew. Staff are attentive and polite, more so than on any other ship I have been on. The almost one staff member per two passengers ratio on board ship is the highest of the major cruise lines and it shows. If you require assistance, then assistance will be there. For me, the real elegant touch were the rolled cotton towels in the washrooms, instead of paper towels.

Having a gross tonnage of only 85,000, classifies this ship as a mid-size ship, but it is certainly big on elegance, service and class.

Gazing across the limpid, fathomless waters of Frederick Sound, one of the world's richest feeding grounds for Humpback whales, these great behemoths had already announced themselves by the oily jets of their 'blows' still dancing in the moist air. Needing no second invitation, my fellow travellers and I aboard the very comfortably appointed 36 passenger boat Explorer climbed aboard the zodiacs, hoping for a closer encounter.

This was my first exposure to Alaska, and to be honest I was still grappling with the sheer scale and vastness of this tangled, untamed wilderness. A land in which tooth, talon and claw continue to prevail, and man's foothold along this labyrinthine coast remains tenuous. Lured by Alaska's treasury of natural riches - dramatic landscapes, world beating whale and bear populations and towering glaciers - it had already been an eventful first few days.

With the outboard engine cut and the zodiac now bobbing gently, the wheezing trumpet of the whales two-hundred mile an hour exhalations as they surfaced from a dive drifted audibly across the stillness of the bay. They seemed all around us. We were specifically on the trail of two adult humpbacks who we had watched gracefully turn tail and slide down into the impenetrable depths just a few minuted earlier and now hoped would re-surface nearby. Feet shuffled impatiently, hushed conversations and almost tangible stifled excitement as we waited.

And then without warning, rising up almost directly beneath us, 40 tonnes of surfacing cetacean suddenly erupted with that triumphal bugal just feet from the edge of our boat, scaring the hell out of all onboard! The joker in the pod and clearly enjoying his practical joke, it then circled us once in what seemed like a salutary wave, before sliding away into the inky depths. A rare fleeting encounter, forever bored into the mind's eye, and at the same time neatly encapsulating the very essence of this rugged land: wild, beautiful, unpredictable.

The Russians must be truly gutted having sold it to America for just 2 cents an acre in 1867.
